Collective celebrates International Mother Language Day

A Collective of Public Organizations, academic and non-governmental commemorated this day 21 February, "International Mother Language Day", with a series of artistic and cultural activities in the Patio of Peace at the National Palace of Culture. This celebration was instituted by UNESCO in November 1999.

The welcoming remarks were made by Leiva Gutberto, Deputy Minister of Intercultural Bilingual Education, Ministry of Education, who said that in Guatemala the national languages ​​are recognized from the peace accords, specifically in the agreement of identity and rights of indigenous peoples.

During activity, artistic interventions that gave the multicultural touch to the celebration were performed, including musical performances highlight parts cago Marimba Concert National Palace of Culture, the screening of a documentary made by TV Maya and messages related to the celebration by representatives of the 4 people. Also, the National Council of Mayan Education delivered a series of petitions to government authorities.

Near the end of the event, it featured the musical presentation of Music Classrooms and Children's Choir Kaqchikel of San Antonio Aguas Calientes, Sacatepéquez.

Demetrio Cojtí, Director of Cultural Development and Strengthening of Cultures, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, institution of the Collective, stressed that the commitment to rescue and revitalize indigenous languages ​​is the responsibility of the state but also of public and private institutions and, especially family, for the defense of indigenous languages ​​begins at home.
