Delegation of the Ministry of Culture and Sports attends high-level meeting at OAS

Representatives of the Ministry of Culture and Sports traveled to Washington DC, United States to participate in the sixteenth session of negotiations to seek consensus of the American draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The meeting attended by the Deputy Minister of Culture, Clariza Castellanos, representing the Minister for Culture and Sports, Dwight Pezzarossi, was held at the headquarters of the Organization of American States, which also included representatives of indigenous peoples from different countries.

The intervention of the delegation of Guatemala was important to bring issues of Cultural Integrity, Cultural Identity, Environmental Protection, Cultural Survival, Protection of Cultural Heritage, Intellectual Property, Cultural Development, and the rescue of national identity.

The official said in his speech that "In Guatemala will have significant progress in several of the topics discussed during this session. In the cultural issue many opportunities are displayed together, since being assessed ancestral practices, own heritage and customs of the peoples.

The next Meeting of Negotiations in the Quest for Consensus on the Draft American Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples will take place from 21 to the 23 April 2015 at the headquarters of the Organization of American States-OAS, en Washington DC.
