General objective: Coordinate inventory and studies on intangible cultural heritage bearers of culture.

Specific Objectives: 1. Coordinate interagency processes for the construction of inventories and intangible cultural heritage studies. 2. Develop awareness raising and promotion of intangible cultural heritage.

Functions and powers:

Provide advice and support to culture bearers encouraging active community participation, in the register of cultural elements.
Preparation of technical reports on the processes developed in the communities on inventories of intangible cultural heritage.
Prioritization of the cultural elements that are at risk, adopting measures to safeguard the intangible cultural heritage.
Construction of methodologies and tools for collecting information.
Monitoring and evaluation of the actions taken by bearers of culture in their communities on the recording and preparation of inventories of intangible cultural heritage.

 

Background

Guatemala's government having adopted at the 32nd session of the General Conference of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization-UNESCO, held in Paris from September 29 to October 17 two thousand and three the "Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage", ratified the Convention and undertakes faithfully to perform and implement the provisions contained therein, signed on the fourteenth day of September two thousand and six.

As part of fulfilling these mandates, establishes the inventory and Studies Unit and its operation is governed by the Manual of Organization and Functions of the Ministry of Culture and Sports in January, two thousand eight. The creation of this space is achieved in the year two thousand and eleven, when contracting under the line 029 professional technical services of the person who holds the position of coordinator.

Services provided
  • Provide technical assistance to communities, groups and individuals interested in the following topics:
  • Awareness and information of intangible cultural heritage
  • What is the inventory of intangible cultural heritage.
  • Identifying stakeholders and culture bearers to accompany the process of recording your PCI.
  • Training for persons responsible for preparing inventories of their communities.
  • Technical visit to the applicant community in the recording and reporting of PCI.
