Agreement strengthens the protection of cultural heritage in the event of disaster

Protection of Cultural Heritage of Guatemala is one of the State's obligations. For this reason the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) signed a cooperation agreement between the two institutions, in order to define lines of action to assess damage to monuments and cultural property in the event of disaster.

The agreement was held on Monday 3 June at the Banquet Hall of the National Palace of Culture in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Cultural and Natural Heritage on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, Rosa Maria Chan and Executive Secretary CONRED, Alejandro Maldonado.

According to the document, with the firm will have a legal basis which will establish joint action lines and make a better assessment of damage to property in the event of disasters, well as the tools and infrastructure to protect monuments. It also indicates that both instances must transfer knowledge and skills and strengthen two-way conservation strategies.

The document is legally supported by the Constitution of the Republic of Guatemala, the law creating the Act CONRED and Cultural Heritage of the Nation.
